June 21st, 2024 National Indigenous People’s Day

Steve Maracle is an Indigenous Artist. He is Mohawk, Turtle Clan, and from the bay of Quinte community, Tyendinega Territory.

Throughout the LDCSB, he shares his Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural teachings through his gift of painting.

His painting, titled 'Unity;' acknowledges the gift of Turtle Island. Creation is our first teacher, and we express gratitude for all that has been provided. The three women are united in body, mind, and spirit. The middle woman represents a grandmother. Grandmothers serve as an important role for Indigenous communities; their wisdom, teachings, compassion, and love bring people together. They provide hope and guidance when called upon. They look to uplift those around them and help them along their own journey. Three generations are gathered and look towards a brighter horizon; where we are united through relationships and human connection.
